53rd Annual Chicago International Film Festival , a world-renowned, Academy-qualifying festival with a mission of discovering and showcasing new talents, exemplified by its New Directors Competition for first- and second-time directors. The Festival features an array of competitive and non-competitive categories, including the Out-Look Competition (featuring bold LGBTQ-themed films), After Dark program (featuring horror , thrillers, dark comedies and cult-classics), Black Perspectives (featuring films that celebrate the richness and diversity of black cultures around the world), City & State (featuring works from Chicago and across Illinois), and many others.

In 2016, the Festival screened approximately 200 films from around the world, celebrating diverse cultures and the art of storytelling. Committed to recognizing emerging filmmakers, the Roger Ebert Award was awarded to Atilla Till for Kills on Wheels (Hungary), a thrilling dramedy that went on to receive international laurels; and the Gold Hugo for Best Film was awarded to Cristi Puiu (France) for Sieranevada which also went on to be recognized at festivals around the world.

Throughout this two-week celebration, Festival attendees will have opportunities to meet and mingle with talents in all areas of filmmaking. Last year, Festival guests attended and participated in the second annual Industry Days: a series of panels, discussions, and networking events for filmmakers and industry professionals designed to illuminate and celebrate the ever-changing art and business of film.

The Chicago International Film Festival is an annual, not-for-profit, competitive film festival organized to encourage better understanding between people of diverse cultures and to make a positive contribution to the art of the moving image.

Cinema/Chicago, the presenting organization of the Chicago International Film Festival, offers a number of year-round programs dedicated to the art of the moving image. The CineYouth Festival showcases films from the best and brightest young filmmakers from around the world, and the Education Program welcomes thousands of Chicago Public School students to free screenings throughout the year. Additionally, the International Screenings program plays host to weekly screenings of international cinema free and open to the public all summer long and the annual Chicago International TV Festival honors the art of the small screen.
