In the Spotlight, Withoutabox
London – United Kingdom
November 21 to 25, 2017
In the Spotlight is the 7th Annual UK Film Festival (UKFF). Screening in the heart of London at the prestigious Warner Bros Theater and offering the largest cash prize in the UK (for short film) UKFF welcomes films of all types from around the world. Championing great films, the Festival particularly seeks work from those filmmakers who might not yet have had a prestigious public screening. Notable attendees have included Judi Dench, Dustin Hoffman, James Corden, Bill Nighy, and Timothy Spall.

Mat Kirkby, Oscar Winner and Director at Ridley Scott Associates states that “The UK Film Festival is the most focused, passionate and quality driven film festival in the UK. Their invaluable support helped get me to the Oscars in 2015, where I won the Academy Award for best short film.” With a program that showcases new talent alongside established directors, filmmakers and actors UKFF is a lively networking hub. Over the last six years UKFF has quickly become a career stepping stone, establishing a tradition of discovering and promoting films which have gone on to be Oscar and BAFTA nominees and winners.

The newly launched script competition has also made a big impact – four scripts have been optioned and two have been produced. The UKFF is BIFA qualifying with their Official Selection in good company – as previous highlights include the film festival premiere of Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot. Some of the UKFF winning feature films have gone on to be Oscar winners such as Ida from Poland, The Broken Circle Breakdown from Belgium, and Mat Kirkby’s short film The Phone Call with Jim Broadbent and Sally Hawkins. The festival recently premiered Shok , directed by Jamie Donoughue, which then went on to earn an Oscar nomination in 2016. Other highlights have included the 2016 Oscar winner for short film, The Stutterer as well as the 2015 Oscar nominee and BAFTA winner Boogaloo and Graham, and the 2016 BAFTA winner Operator.
